PA 6 (cast)

Description

General

Suited for casting under atmospheric pressure, however under a nitrogen atmosphere to avoid oxidation. The casting involves four steps: 1) melting the caprolactam, 2) preparation of two caprolactam solutions, the first containing the catalyst and the second containing the accelerator, 3) fast mixing the two reactive liquids and 4) casting the mixture in a hot mould. To avoid internal stresses in products the polymerised products are cooled at a low rate (5ï¾°/hour).

Polyamide is made from caprolactam which can be derived with several processes. Here crude oil is processed via naphta to benzene, that to cyclohexane and finally to caprolactam. Caprolactam is polymerised at 250ï¾°C to PA. The required energy supply was assumed to come from oil.
