| Environmental remarks | Data concerning 36 European ethylene plants producing 4.5 million tonnes of polyethylene. 10 plants produced 1.3 million tonnes HDPE. The data are averaged over the plants. Total energie content of HDPE is 69 - 102 MJ/kg, with an average of 81 MJ/kg . Most plants use electricity from the public supply. The data take account of the country in which the operations are carried out. All activities for extraction of raw materials and fuel is included in the data. The same holds for transport to the plants. More information is given in Report no 3 of PWMI. | |
| Remarks | Good resistance against chemicals and impact. Very little waterabsorption. Incineration value (lowest): 43.5 MJ/kg. Not fit for glueing. Price recycled material 0,34 - 0.46 EUROl/kg. HDPE is not or difficult to bond with an adhesive. Bonding is only possible with cyano-acrylaat after the application of a primer. With cyano-acrylaat it is not possible to bond with glass, stone and concrete. | |

Last november was a memorable month for us at Matbase, we passed the milestone of 1000 visitors per day. So I guess we were not that far of when we thought it would be a good idea to make the material database we used as students during our stay at the Delft University of Technology accessable to other people. Apparently, people appreciate the easy way they can lookup the material properties and how we present the data.
