Environmental remarks Considerable differences appear in practice. Therefore we used the energy requirements of winning in open mines and smelting in the main producing countries US and Chile as basis. The sulfidic ore has a copper content of 0,6%. There is also a wide spread in the emission of SO2 during the refinery process. This reaches from 38 gram/kg Cu to 3500 gram/kg Cu, with an average of 1060gram / kg Cu. Often the reclaimed SO2 is used for the production of sulphuric acid. The world avererage scrap percentage is 20%.
