General Information: Carbide Ceramics

Extreme hardness. Very high wear resistant. Price largely depends on the geometry of the product but is approximately 5 or 10 times as high as steel.  Carbides are typically brittle ceramic materials. As such they, unlike metals, show no significant ductility or 'graceful' failure mechanisms.  The mechanical properties are strongly dependent on their surfaces and the presence of defects resulting from their finishing and handling. Production of ceramic articles start with fine powder which is given shape by various casting and pressing methods prior to sintering at approximately 0.7 of the melting temperature.
