Matbase is an unique and extensive database with physical, mechanical and environmental property data in all major material categories. Our goal is to collect and share material data and to build a community for specialists, designers, engineers, students and buyers to exchange knowledge and experience. What do we offer?
Free access
Free access to a vast database with mechanical, physical and environmental property data of all major product categories.
Intuitive multi-entry navigation
We offer access to the data through our intuitive and multi-entry navigation and search tools. Whether you need general or detailed info, you have quick and easy access to the desired data.
All material categories
Our background does not limit us to a single material category. As industrial design engineers we understand that comparing all material categories can pay off.
All properties
Our ambition is to offer the most up-to-date and complete overview of mechanical, physical and environmental properties
Supplier listings
So now you know what material to use for your design, but where can you get it? Select suppliers near you from our listings. We list all suppliers for free and offer options for advertising and preferred listings
Design guidelines and examples
Design for Sustainability and Ecodesign are terms you might have heard of, but you don’t really know how it works, or you just would like to know more. Visit our Guidelines page for guidelines and an insight in some of the theory. So far for theory, but what does the practice look like. Visit our Examples page to see what other companies have accomplished by applying the theory.
Community
Perhaps you have questions that cannot be answered with the help of our database or you have knowledge which you would like to share with others. For that reason we have created a community of people working with materials in any possible way. Visit our community and meet with our affiliated experts and other users.
Who are we?
We are Barbara Houtzager MSc, Rogier Overbeeke MSc and Richard Vennix MSc. We graduated at the Delft University of Technology at the Design for Sustainability Research Group and have specialized ourselves in Innovation Management and IT. Since 1999 all three of us have been involved in a wide range of projects in those fields as freelance consultants.
A little history
This project was originally started by Dr. Han Remmerswaal MSc of the Design for Sustainability Research Group at the Delft University of Technology, but since the core business of the university is research and education, the database was not widely promoted and not many people were familiar with this product. We obtained the rights to exploit the database, so now we can share it with you.

So I guess we were not that far of when we thought it would be a good idea to make the material database we used as students during our stay at the Delft University of Technology accessable to other people. Apparently, people appreciate the easy way they can lookup the material properties and how we present the data.
