Novelis has developed a special alloy, Anticorodal-170, which shows significantly improved hemming characteristics during assembly enabling sharpest hemming radii even after strong local pre-straining of the material.
The established aluminium alloy for outer body applications, AA 6016, offers very good formability, but reaches its limits when tight hemming (bending radius zero) is envisaged in particular for hang-on parts where the material is already heavily pre-strained. The new alloy is supplied in the PX temper for improved paint bake response leading to a slightly higher service strength (dent resistance) than that of the standard outer-body alloy, AA 6016. All other properties are equal or better than traditional aluminium outer body alloys.

Last november was a memorable month for us at Matbase, we passed the milestone of 1000 visitors per day. So I guess we were not that far of when we thought it would be a good idea to make the material database we used as students during our stay at the Delft University of Technology accessable to other people. Apparently, people appreciate the easy way they can lookup the material properties and how we present the data.
